Pacquiao vs Cotto Winner Result - Pacquiao Wins

Pacquiao vs Cotto Winner Result - Pacquiao Wins

Pacquiao vs Cotto Winner Result: Pacquiao Wins
- Manny Pacquiao's speed and power were way too much for Miguel Cotto's heart.

Pacquiao put on yet another dominating performance Saturday night, knocking down Cotto twice and turning his face into a bloody mess before finally stopping him at 55 seconds of the 12th round.

The Filipino star used his blazing speed and power from both hands to win his seventh title in seven weight classes and cement his stature as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Cotto took such a beating that his face was a river of red from the fury of Pacquiao's punches, but he refused to quit even as his corner tried to throw in the towel after the 11th round.

"I didn't know from where the punches were coming," Cotto said.

The fight was billed as a 145-pound classic, and in the early rounds it didn't disappoint. The two went after each other with a vengeance and Cotto more than held his own as they traded punches in the center of the ring before a roaring sellout crowd at the MGM Grand arena.

Pacquiao dropped Cotto with a right hand early in the third round, but he wasn't badly hurt and came back to finish the round strong. But after Pacquiao put Cotto on the canvas with a big left hand late in the fourth round, the Puerto Rican was never the same again.

Cotto won two rounds on the scorecards of two ringside judges and just one round on the card of the third. The Associated Press gave Cotto just the first round.

"Our plan was not to hurry, but to take our time," Pacquiao said. "It was a hard fight tonight and I needed time to test his power."

Cotto's face was marked early and he was bleeding midway through the fight as Pacquiao kept bouncing around and throwing punches in his unorthodox southpaw style. He tried to keep taking the fight to Pacquiao, but by then his punches had lost their sting and his only real chance was to land a big punch from nowhere.

"He hit harder than we expected and he was a lot stronger than we expected," Cotto's trainer, Joe Santiago, said.

Cotto fought gamely, but in the later rounds he was just trying to survive as blood flowed down his face and Pacquiao came after him relentlessly. Santiago tried to stop the fight after the 11th round, but Cotto went back out to take even more punishment before a final flurry along the ropes prompted referee Kenny Bayless to end it.

Cotto's wife and child, who were at ringside, left after the ninth round, unable to watch the beating any longer. They later accompanied him to a local hospital for a post-fight examination.

"My health comes first. I just want to make sure I'm fine, but I feel great. I'm swollen but that's all," Cotto said.

His face swollen, Cotto was bleeding from his nose and his cuts, and he simply couldn't stop Pacquiao from bouncing inside and throwing both hands at will.

"Manny Pacquiao is one of the best boxers I ever fought," Cotto said.

Pacquiao, coming off of spectacular wins over Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, added another one against Cotto, who had lost only once and held the WBO version of the welterweight title.

Pacquiao did it in his trademark way, throwing punches in flurries and from all angles until Cotto began to slow down. Then he pursued him nonstop until the end.

The fight likely will set up an even bigger one against Floyd Mayweather Jr., and many in crowd were already chanting, "We want Floyd! We want Floyd."

"I want to see him fight Mayweather," trainer Freddie Roach said.

Mayweather may have second thoughts after Pacquiao did what no fighter has done before — win a belt in a seventh weight class. More impressive, though, is how he has fought, dismantling opponents despite moving up consistently from 106 pounds to the 144 he weighed for the fight.

The welterweight ranks will be the last ones Pacquiao conquers, though.

"This is the last weight division for me," Pacquiao said. "It's history for me and more importantly a Filipino did it."

He was so dominant in the later rounds that Cotto was fighting backward most of the way, simply trying to survive. Pacquiao was credited with landing almost twice as many punches — 336-172 — as Cotto.

"I knew when Cotto started backing up, the fight was over," Roach said.

Pacquiao earned a minimum $13 million, while Cotto got $7 million.

Pacquiao was favored, largely off his last two performances in which he forced De La Hoya to quit on his stool and then knocked out Hatton with a huge left hook in the second round. Some in boxing, including Roach, thought Cotto had been slowed by his devastating loss last year to Antonio Margarito and would be further slowed by having to come in 2 pounds lower than his normal weight.

That wasn't the case early in the fight, with Cotto winning the first round and fighting well. Once he was knocked down by a big left hand late in the fourth round, though, he slowed noticeably.

It’s finally been made official, the Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto super fight is now signed and sealed. On November 14 th, 2009 from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Nevada, pound for pound champion Manny Pacquiao will take on welterweight powerhouse Miguel Cotto.
The fight will be fought at a catch weight of 145 pounds. The weight was one of the biggest factors holding up the creation of this fight, as Pacquiao’s camp wanted Cotto to come down even farther. Finally the two sides agreed on 145, 2 pounds lighter than the welterweight limit.

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao

49 (37) – 3 – 2
Height: 5′6″ Reach: 67″
Current Pound for Pound Champion
Last 5 fights: 5-0 with 3 knockouts against Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, Juan Manuel Marquez, David Diaz and Marco Antonio Barrera, spanning four weight classes from super featherweight to welterweight

Miguel Cotto

34 (27) – 1
Height: 5′7″ Reach: 67″
Current WBO Welterweight Champion
Last 5 fights: 4-1 with 2 knockouts against Joshua Clottey, Michael Jennings Alfonso Gomez and Shane Mosley with the defeat coming against Antonio Margarito

Pacquiao vs. Cotto Fight Preview

Manny Pacquiao’s opponent for his November fight was unknown for quite some time. Finally it appeared that Shane Mosley would be the man to step into the ring with him. However, Team Pacquiao and Team Cotto were able to finalize the deal, made all the easier since both men are promoted by Bob Arum and Top Rank Promotions.
Pacquiao will have the clear speed advantage in this bout. He showed the world what his speed could do even at the higher weight classes against the likes of Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton.
Miguel Cotto on the other hand will come into the ring as the naturally larger man, having fought at junior welterweight and welterweight for his entire career. He also has superior boxing skills, while Pacquiao is the more dynamic offensive fighter. Team Pacquiao is also hoping that forcing Cotto to cut weight down to 145 pounds will leave him weaker, and Pacquiao more able to capitalize on that vulnerability.
Which man will have the edge come fight night? Some people wonder how much Miguel Cotto has left in the tank after his beat down from Margarito, however, he has rebounded and gutted out a tough win against Joshua Clottey. And isn’t there ever going to be a limit on Pacquiao, on the size and caliber of the fighters he can continue taking out so impressively?
We’ll have to wait for fight night to see the winner of this exciting match between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto. The winner will have the world at his fingertips, and may end up facing Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez or Floyd Mayweather.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto Preview – 4 Questions to Ask

Pacquiao vs. Cotto Question 1: How will the catchweight affect the fight?

The fight is being contested at 145 lbs, which is two pounds lighter than the welterweight limit of 147 lbs. This should work in Pacquiao’s favor, as he is the naturally smaller man. Cotto was very vulnerable in his final fights at junior welterweight due to the strain of cutting weight.
Having to cut down lower than he has been accustomed to for the last three years could bring back some of those vulnerabilities, a possibility that team Pacquiao clearly had in mind when making the bout and demanding a catchweight. If you don’t think cutting weight can make you a weaker fighter, see De La Hoya’s performance against Pacquiao, where he cut down to 147 lbs for the first time in a decade.
Pacquiao vs. Cotto Question 2: Will Manny Pacquiao stand up to Miguel Cotto’s punches?

Considering the shell of Oscar De La Hoya that entered the ring to face Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto will be the hardest puncher that he has ever fought. He has broken down and brutalized fighters who have been far more accustomed to facing larger opponents than Manny Pacquiao currently is; fighters like Carlos Quintana, Zab Judah and Paulie Malignaggi. If Miguel Cotto catches Pacquiao with a flush shot, you can be sure that the effects will be felt by the Filipino sensation. Which brings us to Pacquiao vs. Cotto Question 3…
Pacquiao vs. Cotto Question 3: Will Miguel Cotto be able to catch up to Manny Pacquiao?

There are some things that you can’t truly prepare for with sparring. The frenetic style, blazing foot speed and hand speed, and pinpoint accuracy of Manny Pacquiao all fall into that category.
However, his speed can be neutralized with a combination of several different factors. First, you need to employ a quick jab to keep Pacquiao busy with your own offense and keep him at arm’s length as much as possible. Second, you need to have a sturdy enough chin to keep your offense intact even when you get caught. Third, you need to cut off the ring, and fire back when fired upon.
Pacquiao’s arch-nemesis, Juan Manuel Marquez, has employed that strategy to perfection, however his chin has come up just a bit short, costing him valuable points. Erik Morales, the lone man to officially beat Pacquiao in the last decade, employed a version of this plan in their first encounter when he came away with the win.
Miguel Cotto has an underrated jab, he can cut off the ring and he can fire back when fired upon. But that one remaining element, his chin, brings us to Pacquiao vs. Cotto question 4…
Pacquiao vs. Cotto Question 4: How will Miguel Cotto’s chin hold up?
Miguel Cotto was gaining a reputation as a very “chinny” fighter during the end of his 140 lb tenure. However, his move up to 147 lbs alleviated some of those concerns, as he was clearly stronger in the ring and held up much better, even against larger fighters. That was of course until the Margarito fight. Cotto withstood a great deal of pressure but eventually crumbled.
After a fighter has been knocked out once, his chin may end up “broken”, both mentally and physically, leaving him more prone to future slipups. Another concern is the catchweight, as discussed previously. If Cotto has to struggle to get down to 145 lbs, his chin could very well be a major concern when faced with Pacquiao’s lightning quick strikes.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto Prediction

The answers to the above four questions will ultimately determine how the Pacquiao vs. Cotto fight plays out. The sports books, and the legion of Filipino fans laying down money on the bout, clearly feel that those questions will be answered in Pacquiao’s favor. As of today he is a -260 favorite against Cotto, while Cotto is a +200 underdog.
Is this a case of severely underestimating Miguel Cotto, or conversely, a case of extremely overrating Manny Pacquiao? Absolutely, on both counts.
Miguel Cotto has faced diversity in the ring and has faced many top fighters, and he has emerged victorious all but once. That one exception, as brutal as it was, was against a fighter who may or may not have been cheating at the time; a fighter who also had the perfect style to match Cotto’s.
Meanwhile, as Pacquiao has bounced around the weight classes adding big names to his resume, he has yet to face a fighter as dangerous as Cotto is. De La Hoya was long since removed from his prime, and was clearly running on fumes during the contest. Hatton was coming off a previous knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather and had been continually exposed as being one dimensional and somewhat chinny himself.
With all of that said, am I bucking the trend and picking Cotto here in my Pacquiao vs. Cotto prediction? No. In honestly answering all four of the above questions I posed, I feel Pacquiao is going to win the day yet again.
I think the contracted weight of 145 lbs will be a detriment to Cotto and his strength (question 1). I think Pacquiao will hold up against Cotto’s punches (question 2), in large part because I think Cotto won’t be able to consistently catch up to him (question 3). Finally, I think that even though Pacquiao can’t one-punch KO Cotto ala the Ricky Hatton fight, his punches will be able to hurt him and slow him down after rounds of accumulation (question 4).
Four out of four isn’t bad. Pacquiao won’t decimate Cotto though. Expect a tough battle that goes the distance, with both fighters being cut and busted up, and both fighters surviving several tenuous moments. Ultimately, Pacquiao will win more rounds and inflict more damage, and he’ll take home the decision victory.

Malacañang still looking for vice presidential bet in 2010

Source:

After Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno announced on Friday he is no longer running for vice president in 2010, a Malacañang official said Saturday that the administration party is still looking for someone to fill the position.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said there are efforts by the administration Lakas-Kampi-CMD to look for a running mate for Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.

“There is an effort to look for a vice presidential candidate for Sec. Teodoro. That’s as much I can tell you," Ermita said on government-run dzRB radio, when asked if the administration is in talks with Senator Loren Legarda, who reportedly shut her doors to teaming up with Secretary Teodoro.

Ermita refused to give further details, but said the administration coalition will likely be ready with a list for its national convention scheduled for November.

On Friday, Secretary Puno announced he had decided not to participate in the 2010 elections anymore. [See: DILG chief Puno gives up VP ambitions]

“We continue to search for a vice presidential candidate for our chosen presidential candidate, Sec. Teodoro. And we will be prepared with the list with that vice president for the national convention we will be having early next month," Ermita said.

He also said the selection will be “deliberate," saying they will “go countrywide and find the ideal candidate for Sec. Teodoro."

Also, Ermita denied claims that Puno was pressured to drop out of the race because administration allies wanted Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos to be Teodoro’s running mate.

“There’s no truth to that. In the first place, somebody told me I think it was Gabby (Claudio) who told me walang definite about Vilma talaga (it was presidential political adviser Gabriel Claudio who told me there was nothing definite about Vilma)," he said.

Exodus to NP?

Meanwhile, Ermita laughed off the claim of Sen. Manuel Villar Jr.’s Nacionalista Party that many administration allies are defecting to the NP.

He said there are many groups in the provinces who are taking their oaths as new recruits of Lakas-Kampi-CMD.

Ermita said that on Friday, 100 leaders of Quezon province “gathered" by Rep. Danilo Suarez – who hosted an expensive dinner for Mrs. Arroyo and her entourage in the United States – took their oaths as Lakas-Kampi-CMD members.

“On Tuesday and Wednesday there will be hundreds of leaders from Tarlac and also from Northern Samar. Susunod ang sa Batangas at Cavite. Mas marami ang may exodus (After Tarlac and Northern Samar, leaders from Batangas and Cavite will pledge allegiance to us. So
there is also an exodus for us)," he said.

He said the exodus can be partially due to the Commission on Elections’ decision to affirm the accreditation of Lakas-Kampi-CMD, and denying the petition of former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. to question it.

Petition vs Erap

Ermita likewise laughed off claims from the camp of former President Joseph Estrada that the administration is lining up petitions questioning his eligibility because it is scared of the opposition.

He said the Palace already made it clear that while the issue will be decided at the judicial level, it does not mean the Palace will head efforts to question Estrada.

“We are not afraid of anything, this is a free country," he said. - GMANews.TV

| | More LOS ANGELES – "Where the Wild Things Are" proved a bigger hit with adult audiences than family crowds as the adaptation of Maurice Sendak's beloved children's book debuted at No. 1 with $32.5 million.

Moviegoers 18 and older accounted for 43 percent of the audience, while parents with children made up 27 percent, according to distributor Warner Bros.

Overture Films earned the No. 2 spot with Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler's vengeance thriller "Law Abiding Citizen," which debuted with $21.3 million.

Expanding into wider release, Paramount's low-budget horror sensation "Paranormal Activity" moved up to No. 3 with $20.2 million.

Shot for a reported $15,000, "Paranormal Activity" outdid the premiere of Sony's fright flick "The Stepfather," which cost $19 million and played in nearly four times as many theaters but managed just a No. 5 opening with $12.3 million.

The results for "Where the Wild Things Are" matched the intent of director Spike Jonze, who viewed his take as a story about a child, but not necessarily a children's movie.

During production, Jonze had clashed with Warner Bros., which had wanted a more kid-friendly film. The studio gave Jonze more time and money to finish the film and ultimately backed his vision with a huge marketing campaign for "Wild Things."

"I think all sides reached a very happy compromise, and certainly Spike delivered a movie that was so true to the book, yet it generated the emotion that we felt strongly about to bring in our family audience, as well," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner.

Jonze's adaptation features newcomer Max Records as Sendak's misbehaving young protagonist, a boy who journeys to a make-believe island of monsters torn between hugging him and eating him. The live-action and voice cast includes Catherine Keener, James Gandolfini and Forest Whitaker.

A cheap acquisition at the Slamdance Film Festival, "Paranormal Activity" came out of nowhere, riding online fan buzz to a domestic total of $33.7 million so far. The movie expanded to 760 theaters, up 600 from the previous weekend, and has plenty of room to grow.

Paramount plans to expand the movie to between 1,800 and 2,000 theaters next weekend, then widen its release even farther for Halloween. It will go head-to-head with an established horror franchise as Lionsgate opens "Saw VI" on Friday.

Shot in a raw documentary style, "Paranormal Activity" is a twist on the haunted house story as a couple tries to capture on camera the strange phenomena and apparitions afflicting them.

"Paranormal Activity" might have a shot to duplicate the success of "The Blair Witch Project," a 1999 Sundance Film Festival discovery that rode Internet buzz to a $140 million domestic total.

"When you have a movie playing this well and it has such a broad appeal, it certainly tells you that is a possible outcome," said Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount. "I certainly couldn't predict it yet, but nothing with this movie has been predictable so far."

Hollywood had its strongest weekend yet this fall, with overall business at $141 million, up 41 percent from the same weekend last year.

"All the top five movies all did really well. It's kind of exciting to see the box-office get reignited and to see consumers excited about what's available," said Kyle Davies, head of distribution for Overture.

Fans had a good range of choices among horror tales, action, family fare and romantic comedy, including the previous weekend's No. 1 movie, Universal's "Couples Retreat," which slipped to fourth-place with $17.9 million. "Couples Retreat" raised its 10-day total to $63.3 million.

"This is why the fall is such a great time to be not only a studio executive, but a moviegoer. It's really an eclectic mix out there. You don't get this in summer," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Where the Wild Things Are," $32.5 million.

2. "Law Abiding Citizen," $21.3 million.

3. "Paranormal Activity," $20.2 million.

4. "Couples Retreat," $17.9 million.

5. "The Stepfather," $12.3 million.

6. "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," $8.1 million.

7. "Zombieland," $7.8 million.

8. "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" in 3-D, $3 million.

9. "Surrogates," $1.92 million.

10. "The Invention of Lying," $1.9 million. - AP

Gately column sparks Twitter outrage, complaints - Entertainment - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

LONDON – Britain's press watchdog says it has received a record 21,000 complaints about a newspaper column on the death of Boyzone singer Stephen Gately after critics used Twitter to brand the article homophobic and insensitive.

Gately died Oct. 10, aged 33, while vacationing on the Spanish island of Mallorca. An autopsy found he had died of natural causes from fluid in the lungs.

Daily Mail columnist Jan Moir wrote that Gately's death was "not, by any yardstick, a natural one" and said he died in "sleazy" circumstances.

Anger at the column swept social networking site Twitter, with actor Stephen Fry urging his 860,000 followers to contact the Press Complaints Commission.

The commission said Monday it had received "by far the highest number of complaints" in its history. - AP

Beyonce postpones Malaysia gig amid Muslim criticism - Entertainment - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – R&B star Beyonce Knowles has postponed a planned concert in Malaysia, the event's organizer said Monday, following accusations by Islamic conservatives that the show would be immoral.

Knowles, known for her provocative clothes and choreography, had been scheduled to perform at a Kuala Lumpur stadium Oct. 25. The show "has been postponed to a future date to be announced shortly," Malaysian entertainment company Marctensia said in a statement.

"The postponement is solely (the) decision of the artist and has nothing to do with other external reasons," the statement said.

A Marctensia representative declined to say whether the decision was prompted by criticism from the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, the country's largest opposition group, which has called for the show to be scrapped because it would promote "Western sexy performances."

Knowles also canceled a planned performance in Malaysia in 2007 following protest threats by the opposition Islamic party. At the time, her talent agency said the show was called off due to a scheduling conflict.

Instead, Knowles went to Indonesia, also a largely Muslim country, which has less stringent rules about how performers should dress and behave. Female artists at Malaysian concerts are required by government rules to cover up from the shoulders to knees, with no cleavage showing.

Last month, Marctensia addressed concerns that Knowles might wear inappropriate outfits, saying "all parties have come to an amicable understanding" about stage costumes.

Other female pop stars such as Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani have performed in Malaysia despite similar protest threats by conservative Muslims. Both singers wore clothes that revealed little skin.

Some entertainment industry officials say the strict regulations and frequent controversies have discouraged many international artists from visiting Malaysia. - AP

No punches thrown as Tyson, Holyfield meet on Oprah show - Entertainment - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

CHICAGO – No punches were thrown. And neither bit off the other's ear.

Mutual praise and admiration dominated during a face-to-face meeting Friday between former world champion boxers Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield on a live episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

On June 28, 1997, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Tyson was disqualified after biting off part of Holyfield's right ear during their WBA heavyweight title fight.

A respectful Tyson shook hands with his former rival several times during their encounter Friday — which he said was his first chance to speak at length with Holyfield since the ear chomp that made worldwide headlines. Tyson later met with Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.

Tyson told Winfrey earlier that an initial apology after the incident was insincere. But when she asked what he wanted to say to Holyfield, Tyson stopped short of apologizing again. He instead poured on the praise.

"This is a beautiful guy," he said, holding Holyfield's arm affectionately for several seconds. "I just want you to know it's just been a pleasure ... being acquainted with you."

Asked by Winfrey if he was still missing part of his ear, Holyfield pointed to it and said, "Just a little bit."

Holyfield also had a confession of sorts to make: He himself has bitten others, during childhood roughhousing with his siblings as a way to get out of headlocks.

"You talk about biting," he said. "I'm the person that bit every brother in my family."

Holyfield said one reason he wanted to appear with Tyson on television was to demonstrate to youth caught up in violence that reconciliation is always possible.

"We can come together," he said. "We know you can come together."

After sitting down with Winfrey, Tyson spent about 25 minutes meeting with Daley at his City Hall office.

Tyson had asked for the meet-and-greet with Daley and a spokeswoman said the mayor was interested in the chance to talk to the boxer about the problem of youth violence.

Chicago has been in the national spotlight since a cell phone video captured the fatal beating of a high school honors student last month.

Tyson said he understands the pain some young people feel.

"I was one of them. I'm that guy," he said. - AP

The Pacman is Back in Manila and He's in My Gym!

Early today, Team Pacquiao left the cold climate of Baguio City and went straight to Penalosa Boxing Gym in Mandaluyong City. To say the least, it was quite exhilarating to see an old friend once again and if the original plan goes through he'll be spending his workouts here till the day he leaves for the US to challenge Miguel Cotto for the WBO World Welterweight title. He was accompanied by the most popular boxing coach, Freddie Roach, and the rest of the Team Pacquaio, Buboy & Blas Fernandez, Dodie Penalosa, Mike Koncz, Alex Ariza, Nonoy Neri, Bobby Pacquiao, and all of his corner men. The Gerry Penalosa Boxing Gym welcoming committee is composed of me and my wife, Goody, our resident trainer, Carmelo Penalosa, the new WPBF Featherweight champ Michael Farenas and my brother in-law Abet Pestano.

Manny did an intense boxing workout, at least 30 rounds, and it looks like he was not at least bit exhausted after the training. He was focused, determined and every inch the champion. The gym was filled with media people, like Ronnie Nathanielsz, Diane Castillejo, Chino Trinidad and some other equally well known sportscasters. Mr. Ernesto Uy of Pagoda Philippines, makers of Family Rubbing Alcohol, was also with the group taking part in the event. It was a fun fun day.

November 14 is drawing near and everyone was nervous on what the outcome of the boxing bout would be... but not I... I am every bit confident that the Pacman will devour Miguel Cotto... Manny might be the smaller guy but he was so fast... Guess they have to change the title of Pacquiao-Cotto fight to "The Quick and the Dead"... Pacman is the quick one...can Cotto be the "dead"?

I want to say "thank you" for the box of fresh gulay from Baguio that Manny gave for my family.. The gift was well appreciated.. Maraming maraming salamat Pre!

Si Gerry Penalosa po para na naman sa isang matinding bakbakan sa balitaan... Hanggang sa muli mga kaibigan!

‘Manny Pacquiao is like Bruce Lee’

Many readers have commented on the upcoming Manny Pacquiao v Miguel Cotto fight on November 14.

Among the more memorable messages is this one, from a Chinese fan: “NICE PACMAN YOUR GREAT…FROM CHINA PEOPLE..YOU LIKE BRUCE LEE HERE IN OUR PLACE….”

The comparison is interesting, because Pacquiao and Lee have at least one thing in common – both were born in the house of Sagittarius (Lee’s birthday was November 27 1940, and Pacquiao’s is December 17 1978).

At a stretch it’s worth noting that two of Pacquiao’s greatest wins have occurred within a fortnight of what would have been Lee’s birthday – his TKO win over Marco Antonio Barrera (November 15, 2003) and his third-round KO of Erik Morales (November 18, 2006). Perhaps it’s no coincidence that Pacquiao agreed to fight Cotto on November 14!

Lee was famous for his abilities as a martial arts fighter, as well as being a movie star, but it seems he tried his hand at boxing too – with great success of course.

According to Wikipedia, Lee won the 1958 Hong Kong Inter-School Boxing Championship by incorporating tactics from the martial art, Wing Chun.

Lee died at the age of 32 on May 10, 1973, more than five years before Pacquiao was born.

AUSSIE, THAI RING OFFICALS ROB FILIPINO UNDERDOGS

LOS ANGELES, California – Unless the Philippine sports authority will flex its muscles and reveals its fangs, the abuses and highway robberies victimizing struggling Filipino professional fighters abroad will go on unabated.

This was the strong lament made by Anastacio “Mang Tacy” Bartolome Sr., an 84-year-old World War II veteran and former boxing trainer in Capas, Tarlac in the Philippines when he learned that two Filipino boxers have been robbed of sure wins simultaneously in Sydney, Australia and Songkhla, Thailand on October 9.

Bartolome, who lives in Irvine, California, was referring to the fates of featherweight Reynaldo Belandres and super featherweight Dante Paulino, both underdogs, who were robbed of “clear” wins against their respective foreign opponents despite their dominance and “impressive” performances.

“During the time of Little Campo and Flash Elorde (in the 50’s and 60’s), we have heard of bum decisions victimizing Filipino fighters in Thailand and Japan but they were quickly minimized because of strong protests lodged by the boxing authority in the Philippines which was (and still today) the Games and Amusement Board,” sighed Bartolome, who fought Japanese invaders in the Southern Philippines alongside American soldiers under the U.S. Army Forces Far East.

‘SHOCKING RESULTS’

Belandres (12-1-2, 8 KOs) lost to Davey Browne (16-1-1, 4 KOs) in a controversial 10-round tiff for the World Boxing Council (WBC) world youth featherweight title in Sydney but not after he reportedly rearranged the nose of the taller Aussie champion.

The controversy prompted the Grange Old School Boxing Promotion to call for a rematch after the verdict was harshly criticized in media.

Belandres reportedly swarmed over the disheveled Browne from the opening bell until the final round and “clearly” outclassed the hometown favorite with over right hand and crisp jabs that found their marks mostly on Browne’s face. But the judges did not agree with his gallant efforts.

In Songhla, some 400 kilometers away from Bangkok, Paulino, 29, who once lost to former world championship challenger Randy Suico and concurrent world champion Chris John, reportedly mauled former world super bantamweight champion Somsak Sithchatchawal in 11 heats for the interim Pan-Asian Boxing Association (PABA) super featherweight title at the Taksin University but the bout ended in “horrific” split draw.

The draw reportedly came as a total shocker as Paulino (14-8-2, 10 KOs) scored two knockdowns in round two and round five.

Somsak (60-3-3, 44 KOs), who won the World Boxing Association (WBA) super bantamweight jewels with a 10th round disposal of Mahyar Monshipour in Hauts-de-Seine, France on March 18, 2006 and lost it via 3rd round technical knockout to Celestino Caballero in Wat Ban Rai, Thailand on October 4 of the same year, reportedly was puzzled by Paulino’s style and could not effectively connect against the moving target.

Paulino reportedly refused to be intimidated by Somsak’s signature body punches and launched his own attack without let up and emerged with more clear shots and superior defense to the delight of the partisan crowd.

When the fight went the distance, two Thai judges submitted different scorecards. Chuchrt Kaokit saw his compatriot winner, 105-104, while Prommase Chakshuraksa played safe at 105-105. Filipino Gil Robiego gave the bout to Paulino, 105-104.

To settle the controversy, the Kokiet Promotion has called for a rematch tentatively next year.

DAMAGE

“But the damage has been done,” rued Bartolome, referring to the twin calls of the Australian and Thai promoters for a rematch.

“Something must be done to teach them (cheating ring officials) a lesson. Strong words must be used to condemn these non-stop highway robberies that deny our local fighters the chance to improve their ratings in the world and damage their morale,” Bartolome, who stands only five feet and one inch, the same height of the first Asian world champion Pancho Villa, boomed.

“Even if they will hold ten more rematches over the next years, who will compensate or restore the busted morale of these Filipino boxers who only earn a living to feed their families and make their country proud?” he concluded.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto: Keys to Victory Part 2 - Training

Pacquiao vs. Cotto: Keys to Victory Part 2 - Training

"The key to victory is not the will to win. Everybody has that. It is the will to prepare to win."

Every great champion knows that 99% of the battle is won not in the boxing ring, but in the training camp.

Which brings us to Pacquiao vs. Cotto: Keys to Victory Part 2 - Training (Read part one here)

35 days to go before the scheduled bout between WBO welterweight champion, Miguel Angel Cotto against the pound-for-pound number 1 and Ring Lineal Jr. Welterweight champion, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao in Las Vegas.

Miguel Angel Cotto knows that to beat a Manny Pacquiao, one must be very well prepared for that battle. For Manny Pacquiao always comes up with new surprises against his opponents, which enables him to shock the world time and again. The WBO welterweight champ is well aware of what Manny Pacquiao could do inside that squared circle. He is not just a small guy whom bigger guys can easily bully. Pacquiao is a little guy that beats the crap out and knocks the bigger guys to unconsciousness in multiple different weight divisions. And all these achievements by Manny Pacquiao have been well chronicled and recorded on video. And those videos, Cotto believes could give them clues as to what Manny Pacquiao could bring to the ring come November 14, and find a blueprint on how to dethrone the reigning pound-for-pound king. There were reports saying that the Cotto's camp are viewing the videos of Pacquiao's three loses, two of which were knock-out losses and the
other one was Pacman's first fight with Morales.

In today's fight game reviewing videos of previous fights of an opponent is a must, as fighters' styles rarely changes, this enables his opponents to know what to expect. Because it’s more likely that the opponent will use the things that worked for him in the past. And with that knowledge, it minimize the element of surprise, by adjusting to the opponent's style, devising moves and techniques to counter or negate his opponents' past effective moves and techniques. In many cases, making these adjustments takes time and effort. For one must do the moves and drills over and over again, up until these techniques become natural for the fighter. He would not need to over-analyze about what to do when the situation arises but he'll just naturally do whatever he practiced in the training camp instinctively. And this is something Miguel Cotto knows very well, as he started his training almost a month and a half before Manny Pacquiao started his training camp.
This allows him more time to adjust and practice the moves he needed to counter Manny Pacquiao's tactical abilities. Analyzing, devising and planning fight strategies seems to be lacking in Cotto's head trainer Joe Santiago's resume, who used to be Miguel's nutritionist, as compared to Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach.

It is also noted that since Miguel Cotto is the bigger man in this match-up, as Pacquiao's conditioning coach Alex Ariza noted during their promotional tour "He (Miguel Cotto) looks like 160lbs!" Not only Miguel Cotto require more time to adjust to Manny Pacquiao's techniques, he also needed more time to gradually go down in weight to make the 145lbs contracted official weight-in. As a fighters' body weight goes higher or lower, most of the time, the more time he uses to adjust to that new body-weight, the more effective he becomes in terms of conditioning. As a fighter goes up in weight, he would have time to fine-tune his speed, for fighters tend to be more sluggish as they go heavier, on the other hand, a fighter that goes lighter would means burning their own muscles, which means they tend to go weaker. But with enough preparation, a fighter can adjust his speed and power with his new body-weight.

Looking at the other training camp, Manny Pacquiao is training in Baguio City, Philippines to avoid paying huge amounts of taxes in the United States. He is being trained by the famed Coach Freddie Roach who molded Manny Pacquiao from being a "left handed bomber" into a well-rounded tactician. It should be noted that in each and every Manny Pacquiao's fights, the Pacman brings something new for the fans to witness. He keeps improving and he keeps learning with each training camp. It should be noted that the Manny Pacquiao who lost three times in the past, is not the same fighter compared to the Manny Pacquiao of today. This improvement from Manny Pacquiao is evidently the work of Coach Freddie Roach.

Pacquiao's training camp kicked off after their US Promotional tour, about 8 weeks before the scheduled fight. Wherein Manny Pacquiao needed to fly half way around the world to get to the Philippines, deal with jet lag and started training with Assistant trainer and bestfriend Buboy Fernandez. About one week after that, Coach Freddie Coach flew in to Baguio City to look over Manny's training. Coach Freddie Roach was impressed with Manny Pacquiao conditioning as they start their hard grind. It seems that Manny Pacquiao keeps himself in shape even during his "off season" days.

Manny Pacquiao, during his training has been followed by the fans and media. People in Baguio usually wait for him to jog by as early as 5 a.m. Manny is constantly surrounded by Baguio police force round the clock during his training. But a fan friendly Manny Pacquiao couldn't let his fans down and give in to autograph request and photo ops from time to time.

There were also reports that Manny Pacquiao sometimes sneaks out of his camp and join friends in a game of basketball at night, which upsets Coach Freddie Roach because it would put Manny Pacquio at risk of injuries.

There were times when Manny Pacquiao would jog along with Philippine Military Academy Cadets, pace with them and gradually pick up speed wherein the cadets were not able to cope up and Manny would end up leaving the cadets behind, running ahead of them. He was then invited for some rounds of target shooting at the camp, which again infuriates Coach Roach as he warns Manny to "Get serious now! We're preparing for a fight!”

Assistant Trainer Buboy Fernandez told media that "Manny Pacquiao knows himself and he knows what he is doing. When he trains, he is a work-machine. Most of the time you don't need to tell him to do things because he's going to do it anyways."

During Manny Pacquiao's training camp, the Philippines was ravaged by back-to-back typhoons, which flooded and damaged many parts of the country, including some parts of Baguio City where Manny Pacquiao trains. As of yesterday, 80% of power in Baguio City is down, and no roads are passable going in or out of Baguio City because of landslides. It was reported that last weekend; Pacquiao motored down Metro Manila to help out distributing relief good to the victims of the floods over there. And this week, Manny Pacquiao would want to lend a hand in helping people who were affected by the typhoon nearby where he is training.

So a Jose Luis Castillo motoring up the mountains to get to Baguio City is unlikely at this time, for the city needs to clear its' roads of rocks, debris and floods to be passable by motorists. The only way to get to Baguio City as of yesterday is through air transport. It is reported that Castillo's arrival in Baguio City would be delayed till he fly in on Sunday. Castillo, the former lightweight champion, now campaigning at welterweight is reported to go to Pacquiao's training camp and aid the pound for pound king as sparring partner. Jose Luis Castillo would bring his "pressure tactic" and power punching to the body similar to Miguel Cotto's as beneficial to Pacquiao's training.

It was also reported last week that Urbano Antillon and Shawn Porter has given Manny Pacquiao a rough time during their initial sessions of sparring. Roach stated last week that "Manny's condition is 40%" at the time while shaking his head. But as the days progressed and more rounds of sparring was logged-in, Manny Pacquiao somehow brought smile to Coach Freddie Roach's face as he slowly comes back to better fighting form. Porter was reported saying "Manny is definitely the best in the world today...He will shock the world all over again."

In each and every move Manny Pacquiao and this team makes, the media shall be behind them. It was reported that Manny Pacquiao is training to do a "Hit and run" tactic; that he shall employ a "three punch combination" and them move out of range, circle to the side. I'm not sure if this disclosure of fight plan to the media would be beneficial to Manny Pacquiao during fight night. Is this a ploy from team Pacquiao; saying one thing and then comes to the ring and delivers something that will totally surprise Cotto? Or are they confident that Manny Pacquiao's speed and skills would be too much for Miguel Cotto to handle that they don’t' mind disclosing their fight strategy? From Manny Pacquiao, to his trainer, sparring partners, advisers, down to his dog "Pacman", you'll definitely going to read about them in the Internet.

Again, the big question is, "Will all these distractions during training affect Manny Pacquiao's performance in the ring come fight night?"

One more week to go in Baguio City and Manny Pacquiao and his team will fly to Los Angeles to train at the Wild Card gym, which means, he'll have spend at least one day travelling and several days of jet lag before he could go back to business of training for a fight.

On the other hand, Miguel Angel Cotto trains in Florida. He trains quietly in secret. For indeed in numerous wars in history, they keys to victory are proper preparation and the element of surprise.

The big question regarding Miguel Cotto's camp would be "What's he cooking?"

With one month to go before their fight billed as "Firepower", these two champions know what it takes to defeat champions. They've been there before, they've done it before. Now, its time for both of them, two of the very best in their time, step in the ring and duke it out. And as boxing fans, we surely hope that both fighters had done their homework to bring us the very best fight they could bring.

There's no doubt in my mind that the biggest fight this year is Miguel Cotto vs. Manny Pacquiao. And it is evident that everybody is excited about it.

Pacquiao safe at 150 for bout

MANILA, Philippines - Steady at 150.

With still 34 days before the big fight, Manny Pacquiao hovered around 150 lb and should have no problem making the catchweight of 145 lb when he faces Miguel Cotto for the WBO welterweight crown at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Nonoy Neri of Team Pacquiao yesterday said Pacquiao tipped the scales at 150 the other day after working at the Shape Up Gym in Baguio City. He said the reigning pound-for-pound champ is now training as hard and eating as much.

“He’s very comfortable right now because he gets to eat anything he likes. And by training so hard, he stays at 150. He can lose the five pounds in the last two weeks of training and he’ll be safe,” said Neri, a long-time Pacquiao assistant.

Cotto, who agreed to stake his 147 lb title at a catchweight two pounds lower, said during last month’s press tour in the United States he was at 160 lb, and Pacquiao’s conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, said this should favor the FIlipino icon.

“Cotto has to work harder than us making weight,” said Ariza.

Pacquiao’s chief trainer, Freddie Roach, said Pacquiao is where he should be right now as they entered their third week of training in the country’s summer capital. They will move to Los Angeles on Oct. 24, and to Las Vegas a week before the Nov. 14 fight.

There were reports, however, that Pacquiao might fly to the US earlier because of the spate of typhoons that have hit the country and may have had an effect on his training in Baguio City, which has been terribly affected by typhoon “Pepeng” this week.

Jose Luis Castillo, the former WBC lightweight champion, arrived in Manila yesterday along with super-lightweight Danny Escobar but couldn’t proceed to Baguio to spar with Pacquiao because the major roads leading to the city are impassable due to flooding or landslides.

It’s the first time Pacquiao will fight at 145 lb, even if he took on Oscar dela Hoya at 147 last December. For the fight against the Golden Boy, Pacquiao tipped the scales on the eve of the fight at 142 lb and climbed the ring at 148 1/2.

For this fight, Roach has set the numbers.

“I see him (Pacquiao) coming into the fight at 149 lb, the heaviest he’ll be in,” said Roach.”He was 148 1/2 for Oscar and 147 for Ricky Hatton last May.”

“But I don’t want him going over 150 because going past 150 will make him sluggish. I don’t care if Cotto climbs the ring at 165. We’ll stay at 150 or less,” said Roach, adding that for the official weigh-in the Pinoy champ should be at arounf 143 lb.

Again, weight is no weighty issue for Pacquiao.

BAGUIO CITY – In trying to prove that last week’s bad weather was never an issue in training camp, Manny Pacquiao dominated his sparring partners Tuesday at the Shape-Up Gym in Cooyesan Hotel in this city.

Pacquiao sparred with highly-touted former two-time World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo of Mexico for three rounds then wrapped up his day’s session with a four-rounder opposite American Shawn Porter.
Manny Pacquiao, right, poses with new sparmate Jose Luis Castillo prior to the start of his session with the former Mexican WBC lightweight champion in Baguio City. Dennis Principe
“Hindi problema yung hindi ako nakatakbo ng ilang araw kasi may treadmill naman at sinubukan ko din yung swimming (Not being able to jog for a few days due to storm was not a problem since I could use a treadmill and I also tried swimming)," said Pacquiao. “Maganda na kundisyon ko ngayon. Ok dito sa Baguio kaya hindi dapat mabahala mga kababayan natin (I’m in good condition here in Baguio so my fans and my countrymen need not to be worried)."

Pacquiao is preparing for his upcoming world welterweight clash against Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto set for 12 rounds at a catch weight of 145-lbs on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In his anticipated sparring with Castillo, Pacquiao used his vastly improved lateral movements in trying to avoid the Mexican’s uppercuts and body shots. Pacquiao stalled Castillo’s aggressive attacks with three to five punch combos and counter left straights.

The 35-year-old Castillo (60-9-1, 52 knockouts) ended his first day of sparring with specks of blood on his left nostril, an incident that never got printed in the national dailies.

“I can’t see his left. It’s very fast and strong. I think that will be a big problem of Cotto," said Castillo after the work out.

Chief trainer Freddie Roach, who at first seemed cautious when it comes to having Castillo as Pacquiao’s sparring partner, now expressed his contentment in having the Mexican inside the gym.

“Castillo looked to be off a little bit and he’s never sparred as fast as anyone like Manny. But I like his movement because he moves similar to Cotto. Overall, it was a great work out and I was very happy," said Roach.

In sparring with Porter, Pacquiao again worked on his footwork and stiff combos while moving out of harm’s way.

“That will be one of Manny’s best assets. His ability to throw strong punches while moving out of the ropes," said two-time world champion Dodie Boy Peñalosa, who now works as one of Pacquiao’s assistant trainers.

Roach also denied reports circulating on the Internet that Pacquiao was knocked down in one sparring session last week.

Roach said no one has come close to flooring Pacquiao in any of their sparring sessions in their Baguio training camp.

Last weekend internet forums were deluged with queries and reports that Pacquiao got tagged by American sparring partner Porter.

“That’s a lie. I would know because I would have to pay. He’s getting hit but he’s never been floored ever. The money is still in my pocket," said Roach.

Roach has promised $1,000 for anyone who could put down Pacquiao during sparring. – GMANews.TV

Pacquiao looking stronger than ever

DESPITE having problems in his first sparring sessions with undefeated light middleweight Shawn Porter, Manny Pacquiao is fast becoming stronger than he was when he fought former junior welterweight champion Ricky Hatton five months ago.

Conditioning coach Alex Ariza during a chance interview said Pacquiao looks even stronger than he did for the Hatton fight where the Filipino knocked the Brit out of his senses in Round 2.

"The Manny Pacquiao Blog". Click here for stories and updates on the Filipino boxing champ.

“He is definitely stronger and faster than he is before and if we could hold it here until we get to America and we can hold that weight we will be right on track,” said Ariza who helped Pacquiao improve in terms of his power and explosiveness.

Meanwhile, American trainer Freddie Roach said the number of rounds in sparring should move up by Saturday.

He said they plan to do another six rounds on Thursday while they await a new sparring partner.

Pacquiao plans to defeat Cotto in an attempt to win a seventh title in seven different weight classes. Their title showdown will take place at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roach said Pacquiao will close his training in Baguio on October 24 and in the evening of the same day, a Saturday, they will travel to Los Angeles, rest the following day and resume training at the Wild Card Gym on Monday.

They will spend two more weeks in LA as they wrap up the sparring and begin to taper off, and should be in Las Vegas on the Monday of fight week.

Former WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo, who figured in two brutal bouts with the late Diego Corrales in 2005 (the first one, won by Corrales, being chosen Fight of the Year), is scheduled to arrive Thursday.

After four days of sparring, Pacquiao has logged a total of 18 rounds, the most difficult of which are those with Porter, a junior-middleweight who looks like he’s out to knock Pacquiao out.

The 21-year-old Porter, with more than 200 fights as an amateur and unbeaten in 10 fights as a pro, has forced Pacquiao to keep his hands up in training, having hurt the reigning pound-for-pound champion a couple of times since last week.

Still, the 2007 National Golden Gloves champion is in awe, adding Pacquiao, with both his power and speed, should have the upper hand when he faces Miguel Cotto for the WBO welterweight crown on Nov. 14 in Las Vegas.

“I think Manny’s speed, quickness and power and all that would take care of the whole match for him. He’s quick. He’s very quick,” said Porter, who also excelled as a college football player. (Roderick Osis)

Philippine inmates escape prison with guitar string - Odds and Ends - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

Using nothing more than a guitar cord, two men arrested for robbing a store managed to escape from a police jail in the central Philippines, a local paper reported Saturday.

The two inmates escaped from the Iloilo City Police Station jail by cutting the jail's steel bars with the cord, The News Today reported.

Police identified the two as Mark Anthony Cajandig and Alberto Doronila, who face charges for robbery and violating the anti-drug law.

Initial investigation showed the two escaped from the La Paz district police station Wednesday between 3 and 5 a.m.

City police chief Senior Superintendent Melvin Mongcal ordered the immediate arrest of the two prisoners and relieved the policeman on duty during the jailbreak.

Mongcal directed La Paz police head Senior Inspector Alexander Rosales to reinforce the steel bars of the station's lock-up cell.

The Philippines is reputed to have one of the most “porous" jail system, with jailbreaks rampant due to poor facilities. - GMANews.TV

US man shoot fiancee 1 day before wedding - Odds and Ends - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

WINTER SPRINGS, Florida — A man who thought there was an intruder in his house shot and killed his fiancee the day before they were to be married, police said.

"Right now everything points to a tragic accident," Police Chief Kevin Brunelle told The Associated Press on Friday, adding investigators were awaiting forensic results.

John Tabutt, 62, told investigators he got his gun when he thought he heard an intruder, then fired at a figure in the hallway, according to Brunelle. It was Tabutt's live-in fiancee, 62-year-old Nancy Dinsmore, whom family members say he was going to marry Saturday. Tabutt told authorities he thought she was next to him in bed the whole time.

A message left for a phone number listed for the house was not returned.

Brunelle said no charges have been filed against Tabutt, adding the information he provided has been verified and he appeared "very distraught."

Tabutt was "very concerned about her well-being," standing by while she was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, Brunelle added.

The couple planned to wed in a small ceremony Saturday at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Winter Springs, Dinsmore's son-in-law Scott Sposato, of Vero Beach, told the Orlando Sentinel.

"They loved each other," he said. "It was quite apparent."

Tabutt called the police emergency dispatcher shortly after 2:30 a.m. Friday, moaning and sobbing, the newspaper reported.

"I thought I had an intruder in the house," he told the emergency dispatcher. "Honest to God, she looks dead."

He then thought he heard her take a breath.

"Hang in there, Honey. Hang in there," he said.

Winter Springs is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of Orlando. - AP

Philippine call centers escape wrath of Ondoy - Technology - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

Philippine call centers escape wrath of Ondoy - Technology - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

The Philippines' outsourcing industry emerged unscathed from the destruction inflicted by storm 'Ondoy,' industry executives said.

Only minimal effects were experienced by the Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP), the country's biggest organization of call centers, said, citing stranded employees of three of its member-firms.

Companies such as TeleTech, ICT, and NCO said none of their equipment weredamaged since most their facilities were located in malls, CCAP executive director Jojo Uligan said in a phone interview.

ICT, which has a site in Riverbanks mall in Marikina City, was able to salvage its computers and networking gears by transporting them to the second floor of the building at the height of Ondoy’s downpour.

In the meantime, NCO also has a site in Marikina City but it occupied the second floor of Robinsons mall. It did not report any damages as well.

TeleTech, said to be the biggest call center operator in the country with 17,000 agents, reported two of its sites – in Robinsons malls in Cainta and Novaliches – were surrounded with water but the company said this resulted in “minimal disruption."

The company's “proprietary cloud-based delivery network minimized any business interruption to its clients through its highly reliable failover architecture and its ability to temporarily reroute its clients’ customer inquiries to other locations in TeleTech’s global delivery network," the US-based call center operator said in a statement.

CCAP’s Uligan said call centers in other flood-hit areas such as Laguna were also not affected.

Big player Convergys, which has call center facilities in the province, did not report any disruption or damages.

“If there were some damages, I guess it’s just some tables and chairs," Uligan said. “In terms of business loss, it was not that significant since the numbercalls just decreased by a few percentage."

Those trapped inside the sites, Uligan said, were discouraged from going home and were given sleeping quarters and food.

TeleTech, for instance, doubled the pay of its agents who chose to work while waiting for the waters to subside.

In Libis, Quezon City where a number of call centers are located, agents were also asked to render overtime service since most of their colleagues were not able to report for work.

Uligan said CCAP’s board will soon meet to finalize a disaster mitigation plan which their members can adopt.

“Although each call center has its disaster plan, our strategy will also involve pooling our resources," he said. “We’ve already drafted this a long time ago but Ondoy may have pushed us to finally finish it."

In a way, the great deluge gave the outsourcing industry, particularly call centers, the opportunity to test the robustness of their IT infrastructure.

“One reason why the call center did not suffer very much from this calamity is the fact that they merely rerouted the traffic to other sites," said Martin Crisostomo, executive director for external relations of the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP).

BPAP, the umbrella group for all outsourcing firms in the country, counts CCAP as a member.
Crisostomo said it was actually the road network, rather than the country’s Internet infrastructure, which prevented call centers from operating in full capacity.

“The telecom infrastructure was not disrupted at all during the typhoon. And even if the power was cut off in the affected areas, the call centers had generator sets on hand," Crisostomo said.

He said some call centers such as Sitel, whose site in Julia Vargas St. in Pasig City was not flooded but had a huge number of employees residing in nearby areas, have also released the 13th month pay for its employees.

TeleTech is among those which initiated fundraising efforts by tapping its worldwide employee base.

Crisostomo said a Makati-based legal outsourcing firm, DSM, has also donated outright cash of P50,000 to each of its employees affected by the flood. - GMANews.TV

Pacquiao up vs bigger, meaner sparmates - Sports - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

Bigger and meaner guys will now be the chief sparmates of Manny Pacquiao as training camp for his Nov. 14 “Firepower" title duel with Puerto Rican bomber Miguel Cotto enters its fourth week.

Manny PacquiaoWith the arrival of Mexican toughie Jose Luis Castillo in Baguio City, the “Pacman" will be up against natural welterweights, the weight class where the 28-year-old Cotto currently reigns as the World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion.

Regular sparmate Shawn Porter fights as a junior middleweight, with Urbano Antillon the smallest of them all at lightweight.

Trainer Freddie Roach said he’s inclined to replace Antillon with Castillo for Pacquiao to get use being banged by opponents bigger than him.

The closed-door sparring session resumes Tuesday at the Shape-Up gym inside the Cooyesan Hotel, with Castillo sparring with Pacquiao for the first time.

From the looks of it, Roach believes Castillo, the former World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion, is fit and ready.

“I believe he weighs around 160. According to him, he has a fight scheduled next month, so he must be in good shape," said Roach.

The three-time Trainer of the Year plans to make the 30-year old Filipino ring icon spar four rounds against Porter and three opposite Castillo.

So far, Pacquiao has logged in a total of 31 sparring rounds through three weeks at the City of Pines. He spars three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and looks to complete the regular 150 rounds he usually does while preparing for a major fight. - GMANews.TV

"Eastern Pangasinan has become one big river," pahayag ng opisyal.

Dahil sa baha, hindi na rin umano madaanan ang mga kalsada na patungo at palabas ng Metro Manila, at hindi na rin mapuntahan ang buong Ilocos region, ayon kay Gov. Amado Espino Jr.

"There was really heavy rain, so water had to be released from the dam, otherwise it would have been more dangerous," paliwanag ni Nathaniel Cruz ng Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Administration.

Jorge Escatell.

“The rest of the Cordilleras - Mountain Provinces, Ifugao, Abra, Apayao and Kalinga - were also isolated from other provinces," ayon kay Posadas.

"Nahirapan sila, medyo malakas ang ulan (at) very foggy pa rito. Mahirap ang retrieval operations," paliwanag niya sa panayam ng dzBB radio.

Pinsala sa Cagayan at Ilocos

Inihayag naman ni Melcito Castro ng Office of the Civil Defense sa Cagayan Valley na malaki ang pinsalang idinulot ni “Pepeng" sa agrikultura at kalsada. Tinatayang 1,135 bahay ang nawasak.

“But today, we are having a sunny weather, the first time since Pepeng visited the country," ayon sa opisyal.

– GMANews.TV, AP

Churning floods toy with rubber boats, delay rescues - Regions - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

DAGUPAN, Pangasinan – The streets in this province have become turbulent rivers tossing around rescue boats like they were bathtub toys, preventing access to untold numbers waiting to be saved.

“Malakas kasi ang alon kaya hirap na hirap sila (The strong currents make it difficult for them)," provincial administrator Rafael Baraan told GMANews.TV, referring to the rescue teams in rubber boats trying to reach flooded communities.

Five people have been confirmed dead in Pangasinan, but the number is expected to rise once the rain stops and the floods ebb, leaving victims in their wake.

“The total picture will probably start to unfold tomorrow," Baraan said on Friday.

The five bodies were retrieved in Sison town, according to Baraan, adding that their identities and causes of death could not yet be determined.

Baraan said the hardest-hit areas, which include the towns of Villasis, Rosales, Calasiao, Sta. Barbara and San Fabian, are in dire need of rescue and evacuation. About 60 percent of the province has been reported to be underwater.

As of Friday night, nearly 30,000 people in 36 towns and cities have been affected by Pepeng in the whole of the province. The release of water from San Roque Dam has combined with the rainfall to cause the worst floods here in the memory of many old-timners.

In Dagupan City, where floodwaters are waist-deep, many residents remain in their homes despite orders to evacuate to higher ground. Among them is 54-year-old Jose Caguia, father of seven, who continues to stay with his wife in their flooded house in Brgy. Lucao.

“(‘Yung) mga gamit e, tinitingnan namin (We’re looking after our things)," Jose said when asked why he refuses to be evacuated. Hunger may finally drive him out, since they may be out of food by Saturday.

He may not have to go far. Residents have been catching bangus in the flood waters ever since the storm ruined fish pens and released the food fish, one of Pangasinan's leading products, into the rivers running through the streets.- GMANews.TV

Pacquiao slowly getting back to fighting form - Sports - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

Manny Pacquiao assured everyone else including his trainer Freddie Roach, that he is slowly getting back in shape and expects to be 100 percent ready by the time he climbs the ring and faces World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Miguel Cotto.

“Ok `yung kondisyon ko ngayon. Malayo pa ang laban, still six weeks to go, pero maganda na `yung pakiramdam ko," said Pacquiao to a bunch of Manila-based sportswriters who visited him during the three-hour, closed door workout he had Friday at the Shape-Up gym inside the Cooyesan Hotel in Baguio City.

His declaration came a day after Roach proclaimed that the 30-year old boxing champion is still 40 percent fit as far as his conditioning for the Nov. 14 showdown with Cotto is concerned.

While he’s not about to dispute the assessment of his long-time trainer, Pacquiao stressed that more rounds of workout and sparring eventually, would help him get back to his old rhythm.

“Maganda naman kasi nakaka-recover na ako kaagad," said the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world. “Yan naman ang maganda pag nag-training na ako, mabilis akong nakaka-recover."

To stress his point, Pacquiao was scheduled to go 13 rounds with Roach in the mitts Friday, but shortly after, requested conditioning coach Alex Ariza for `one more round."

“He doesn’t want to stop," Ariza said afterwards.

“He was better (Thursday), but that was with the mitts," said Roach. The job was still to bring what he does to the mitts to fight night."

Later, he did his usual routine at the double end and speedball, then worked on the skip ropes and had his regular stretching before calling it a day.

Earlier, Pacquiao hit the road at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) grounds, where he jogged alongside some of the Filipino cadets, had breakfast with them, and of course, did some photo ops.

Roach said the cadets failed to keep up with Pacquiao but stressed that the incident is nothing unusual since the PMA cadeTs are not professional athletes.

Pacquiao also downplayed the matter, saying, “may mga nakasabay rin naman."

Only two weeks in training camp at the country’s summer capital, Pacquiao is already looking forward to making it a part of his training for future fights. “Maganda rito. Mapuwersa ka kasi mataas ito (1,500 meter above sea level). Mag-improve talaga `yung stamina mo."

Roach has no problem with that, except for one.

“No more fun games," said the three-time Trainer of the Year, referring to the basketball games Pacquiao played with some of his friends Wednesday shortly after training.

That resulted in Pacquiao failing to do his morning jog the following day.

“He can’t play basketball, running and training all at the same time. And he’s gonna miss more days of running because of basketball," said Roach.

“Training for a fight is hard work. We’re getting ready for a fight, and at this stage, there should be no distraction. It should not happen again." – GMANews.TV

DepEd: No more sem break for elementary, high schools - Nation - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

DepEd: No more sem break for elementary, high schools - Nation - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

Elementary and high school classes in places hit by storm “Ondoy" will resume Monday, Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said Saturday.

"In general ang ating sinasabi ay kailangan nang mag-resume ng klase sa Lunes pero maraming exception (In general, we have to resume classes Monday though there will be exceptions)," he said in an interview on dzBB radio.

And to make up for lost time in their school calendar, there will be no more semestral break for those who went on a one-week break, he said.

"Wala nang sembreak, one week lang naman yan (There will be no more semestral break. Anyway it's just one week)," he said.

Lapus said the department is also considering alternatives for the students, such as holding classes on Saturdays and home study.

He said the exceptions are if the school is still not accessible via public transportation; if the school is being used as an evacuation center; and if the local government still suspended classes in the area.

But he said that in general, many want to return to their classes.

The DepEd suspended classes in Central Luzon, Southern Luzon and Metro Manila in the wake of tropical storm "Ondoy" (Ketsana).

Lapus said they will try to consolidate evacuees in a single school to give way to the resumption of classes. Public schools in many flooded places are being used as evacuation centers.

He also said they are looking at "flexible alternatives" such as holding classes in covered courts and other structures. - GMANews.TV

While its intensity has slightly weakened, typhoon "Pepeng" has gained speed as it nears landfall Saturday morning, the state weather bureau said.

It was moving faster at 17 kph as it headed northwest to northern Cagayan, where it is expected to make landfall between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

"Pepeng will be out of the country in the morning of Oct. 5 or by midnight of Oct. 4," Prisco told President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo during the 10 a.m. meeting of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).

State weather forecasters said early Friday night that Pepeng was headed in the general direction of Aurora and Isabela provinces, but early on Saturday they said the typhoon changed course slightly and was headed toward Cagayan province.

Pepeng is expected to be at 130 km northeast of Aparri, Cagayan on Sunday evening and 170 km west of Basco, Batanes Monday evening.

Nilo said the Pepeng is not likely to unleash as much rain as last week's tropical storm "Ondoy," but at the same time he explained that it is still difficult to determine how much rainfall the typhoon would bring as it "is still far away."

Nilo earlier explained that "Ondoy's" record rainfall in many places of Luzon, including Metro Manila, was a result of the southwest monsoon being dragged by the storm. On the other hand, he said, Pepeng would only have "a smaller rain area" compared to Ondoy's, he said.

The rainfall brought by tropical storm Ondoy to Metro Manila and nearby areas in a span of six hours last Saturday was the most in recorded history, surpassing the previous record for the national capital in 1967.

Four areas under Signal no. 3

Pagasa placed four areas in northern Luzon under Storm Signal No. 3. (See sidebar)

In its 5 a.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said "Pepeng" was 260 km southeast of Aparri, Cagayan as of 4 a.m.

"Northern Luzon will experience stormy weather while Bicol region and the Eastern section of Central Luzon will have rains and gusty winds with moderate to rough seas. The rest of Luzon will have occasional rains while Visayas and Mindanao will be mostly cloudy with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms," Pagasa said in its bulletin.

By Sunday morning "Pepeng" is expected to be 150 kms southwest of Basco, Batanes. By Monday morning it is expected to be 290 kms west-northwest of Basco, Batanes.

Pagasa reminded residents in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes under storm signals to take all precautions against possible flash floods and landslides.

It also reminded those living along the coast in areas under storm signals 2 and 3 to be alert against big waves generated by the typhoon. [See: Pagasa warns of 'tsunami-like' storm surges in Bicol, N. Luzon]

Meanwhile, Pagasa said moderate to strong winds blowing from the northwest and southwest will prevail over the rest of Luzon and coming from the southwest over the rest of the country.

The coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.

It also said strong to gale force winds will affect seaboards of Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

"Fishing boats and other small seacraft are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," it said.

On Friday, Malacañang placed the entire country under a state of calamity in preparation for the expected onslaught of Pepeng, the 16th weather disturbance that hit the country this year after tropical storm "Ondoy," which wrought havoc in Metro Manila and Calabarzon where close to 300 people died amid heavy floods.

Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said the decision was arrived at with the concurrence of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).

Remonde said the government had decided to declare a state of calamity "so that all government officials could already use or be prepared for the five percent calamity fund."

President Arroyo on Saturday also said the state of calamity would empower local governments to run after profiteers. - GMANews.TV
